Solutes and Solvents

The ocean's said to hold a lot of fish
As if that comforts anyone at all
For if you think it through you'll surely wish
This platitude were really so banal
You'll witness in that aqueous abyss
A tragic tale of lovers now detached
For two once bonded in ionic bliss
Now severed by a solvent quite unmatched
And every night a callous crescent moon
Throws sodium and chlorine to and fro
And each must watch the other's honeymoon
With hydrogen or oxygen in tow
But water isn't guaranteed success
A solute's just a solvent, only less
